Fun Stuff
Have you ever thought that you would like to try writing a poem? Why not try now? Here are a few tips to get you started...
Tips for Writing Poetry
1. I believe that the first key to writing poetry is to be where you feel comfortable in. Go to your room, your study, or even your garage if necessary. However, you want to avoid complete isolation. Being next to open windows, or sitting in your garden watching the beautiful sunset stimulates your mind about writing. Be somewhere you love.
2. Breathe and relax. I have noticed that by relaxing your body and mind, you are able to create better landscapes with your words.
3. Let your emotions go. Emotions play a huge role in poetry. Writing when sad or happy can create a very different poem. Don't be afraid to let it all out.
4. If you have an idea that you want to express, write it down. Fill your first page with thoughts that rush to your head.
5. Once you know what you want to write, begin mix and matching words on your draft. If you’re looking for a certain feel, go with words that match that feeling.
6. When you’re done, keep in mind that you can change the structure of your poem. Create spaces; capitalise certain words that you want to stick out.
7. Share it with your friends.
If you want to feedback any poetry that you have written you can either bring it into the Learning Curve or send it in the comment box in the contact us form. We will be running a poetry and short story competition over the next few months.
Superstitions
Acorns
An ancient British superstition says that carrying an acorn on your person prevents aging. This possibly comes from the fact that the acorn comes from the oak tree and the ancient Druids believed this tree had special powers. It supposed to work best on women, especially if they carry the acorn in their pocket or bag.
Cotton
If you find a piece of cotton on your dress or suit it is said that you will receive an important letter. This Universal superstition goes on to say that the cotton will probably lie in such a way as to show the shape of the initial of the person sending the letter.
Daffodil
Some people from Wales believe that it is lucky to find the first daffodil of the spring and that to do so will bring the finder more gold than silver in the coming twelve months. It is also supposed to be unlucky to just bring one flower into the house; you should always bring in a bunch.
Hat
If you need to wear a hat be careful when putting it on as it is supposed to be unlucky if you put it on back to front. In America it is said that if a woman should wear a mans hat she wants to be kissed.
Nails
Nails were said to be a form of protection in Roman times as they say iron as a sacred metal. Rusty nails were meant to be even luckier and one should be carried in your pocket.
Shaking Hands
If you shake hands twice with somebody before you leave their company you should make sure that you shake hands with them one more time before leaving their company as you have to counteract the bad luck you could get from shaking hands twice.
Taxis
Taxi drivers are supposed to think that it is lucky to have the letter U on their number plates, also if their caller number is seven or any multiple of seven, they will have a successful career.
